Borussia Dortmund have parted ways with head coach Nuri Sahin following a string of disappointing results that have left the club struggling in domestic and European competitions.
The 36-year-old former Dortmund player and fan favourite was dismissed on Wednesday, 22 January, the day after a 2-1 defeat to Bologna in the UEFA Champions League (UCL). It was the team’s fourth consecutive loss across all competitions.
Appointed in June 2024 after Edin Terzic’s departure, Sahin was expected to build on last season’s success, which included reaching the UCL final. However, Dortmund’s performances this season have fallen well short of expectations.
The team currently sits 10th in the Bundesliga, seven points off the Champions League top-spots, and faces a must-win game against Shakhtar Donetsk next week to keep their European hopes alive.
“This decision hurts me personally too, but it was unavoidable after the game in Bologna,” said Dortmund Sporting director Lars Ricken in a statement on the club’s website before he went on to emphasise the need to prioritise the club’s goals.
“Unfortunately, we have not managed to live up to Borussia Dortmund’s sporting ambitions this season. I wish this special club all the best,” added Sahin.
As the German team searches for a new leader, the focus now shifts to salvaging the remainder of their turbulent season.
